![]() ![]() Desktop Environments is a good example, getting rid of Gnome is Ubuntu is much more difficult than swapping DE's in Debian. Ubuntu comes with a lot installed and a lot of stuff cannot be uninstalled without wrecking your distro due to dependencies. ![]() Debian is centered on a minimal, modular installation - you can choose how little or how much you install and anything installed beyond the base won't carry a lot of dependencies, etc. With that in mind, the key differences between the two lie first in the organizations which develop each distro and secondly the software philosophies which each adhere to.ĭebian is community based (really a remarkable success story). It might take a big more tinkering with Debian and the way you install and use software will differ, but both distros will get the job done for almost all users. ![]() But Ubuntu still rocksįrom a client standpoint, they're both linux, and performance and operation wise you can use either and get the same results. Tl dr : I encourage you tu go with Debian. Meanwhile it is really common that a Ubuntu fix works as well on Debian since it is pretty the same architecture. ![]() With the Ubuntu forums and the load of stack overflow threads on Ubuntu issues it is really simple to fix a Ubuntu issue. On the other hand, Ubuntu has a great advantage : it has a much more user/begginer-friendly community. Now I encourage my friends to switch from Ubuntu to debian. And interestingly enough, with the right themes I found it more beautiful than stock Ubuntu (gnome + flat remix + dash to dock + flat remix blue). I have been amazed how fixable it has been when I stupidly deleted python3 from my system (don't ask why.). The opposite happened! The graphical install make it pretty easy to install, and with a gnome desktop (there are plenty of other desktops, with their other advantages) you are good to go. After using for years Ubuntu 16, and been deceived by Ubuntu 18 and 19 unstability and uncompatibility with my computer, I switched to Debian, thinking that my life will get much more complicated. ![]()
